Herbal Medicine
R. F. Weiss
editore: Thieme Publishing Group
pagine: 372
The classic edition is back! First published in 1988, WEISS'S HERBAL MEDICINE is revered by herbalists and medical professionals alike as the seminal work in the field of phytotherapy. This book has established itself as an indispensable resource and is widely acknowledged as the key text in the field of medical herbalism. You will find clear, detailed information on treating conditions ranging from colds and influenza to rheumatic problems, metabolic and endocrine disorders, cancer, and much more. Conveniently arranged by organ system, the text provides guidelines for prescribing herbal remedies, with sections on dosage, application, and precautionary measures. Plus, for each plant discussed, you will find lists of their occurrence, botanical features, differentiation from related species, constituents, and medical benefits. Proprietary formulations, full references, and a comprehensive subject index of almost 2,000 entries round out the superb coverage! Weiss's life's work examines the subject of herbal medicine from both a clinical and practical viewpoint, incorporating his personal observations and clinical experience with scientific studies.
This material formed the basis of HERBAL MEDICINE, 2/E, also by Thieme. The second edition, revised, expanded and modernized by Volker Fintelmann, streamlines the work into a more clinical text, incorporating the latest scientific research and Commission E findings on the efficacy of herbs. This edition is recommended for allopathic physicians and other medical professionals who are new to the field of herbal medicine. Professor Rudolf Fritz Weiss (1895-1991) is highly regarded as the "founding father" of modern German phytotherapy. He studied botany and medicine at the University of Berlin, qualifying as a doctor in 1922 and subsequently taking additional qualifications in internal medicine. A teaching post in herbal medicine was interrupted by war service as an army doctor, followed by seven years in Russian captivity as a doctor in prisoner-of-war camp hospitals. After retiring from clinical practice in 1961, he devoted his life to the scientific development and acceptance of herbal medicine. Weiss was appointed as a member of the German Commission E in 1978.
He was founder and editor of the Zeitschrift fuer Phytotherapie, and lectured on current advances in the subject at the University of Tuebingen.

Genetic Diagnosis of Endocrine Disorders
Roy E. Weiss , Samuel Refetoff
editore: Academic Press Inc
pagine: 336
Since the beginning of the current century, endocrine disease diagnosis and treatment have moved beyond the standard hormone measurements. While, indeed elevated thyroid hormone levels or low insulin levels signal a specific endocrine disease, correct diagnosis (and therefore correct treatment) depends on an understanding of the molecular basis for the disease. This book will present the "bench to bedside" approach of our understanding of the genetic basis for endocrine disease. It will be organized by endocrine grouping (e.g. Thyroid, Pancreas, Parathyroid, Pituitary, Adrenal, Reproductive and Bone) and genetic/molecular basis for the diagnosis of the various disorders will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the practical nature of diagnosing a disease. For example: 1. Which tests should be done for the diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus Type I in children who presented at less than 6 months; at less than 12 years, in adulthood, etc., and why should those tests be done?; 2. Which genes should be evaluated for subjects with congenital hypothyroidism; 3. Which genetic tests should be ordered in obesity?; 4.
Which genetic test should be ordered in a patient with Parathyroid Carcinoma?; 5. What is the rationale behind testing for Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia? The field of genetic diagnosis of disease is exploding now, with multiple laboratories developing tests for current clinical use. Most practicing endocrinologists and internal medicine physicians don't understand which test to order, how the tests are done, or how to interpret the results. One of the most exciting development in medicine today is the pharmacogenomics revolution - enocrinologists and geneticists need to understand how personalized medicine will fit into the daily care of patients. While this is a quickly growing area and there are textbooks on pharmacogenomics, there is no one source for the spectrum of Endocrine diseases. Presents a comprehensive, translational look at all aspects of genetic diagnosis of endocrine disorders in one reference work.
Endocrinology experts (the researchers who discovered the majority of the gene mutations for a particular disease) teach readers about the molecular basis for diseases in each major endocrine organ system Clear presentation by geneticists of pharmacogenetics and the actual assays used in detecting endocrine diseases Genetic counselors offer expert advice on how to use genetic information in counseling patients

Published in August of 2008, WAIS-IV is the most widely used intelligence test for adults in the world. Substantive changes were made to the WAIS-IV from the WAIS-III leaving clinicians with questions as to how to use and interpret the measure effectively. Written by the creators of the new test, this book serves as the ultimate insider's guide to the new test, providing users with the kind of access to norms and data that would be unavailable to any subsequent book on clinical use of this measure. The book discusses the changes made between 3rd and 4th editions along with an FAQ and answers about use and interpretation. The reader is instructed how to interpret composite scores, and everything needed to use and interpret two entirely new composite scores: the General Ability Index (GAI), and the Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI). This information does NOT appear in the manual accompanying the test. The second section of the book focuses on WAIS-IV use and interpretation with special clinical applications and populations, including with multicultural clients, in neuropsychological settings, with individuals experiencing psychological disorders, and with older adults.
The editors and chapter authors have exclusive access to proprietary WAIS-IV data to run advanced analyses and provide information beyond what is offered in the WAIS-IV manual. * Provides practical advice on scoring and administration * Facilitates understanding WAIS-IV use with special populations * Describes use of the WAIS-IV with WMS-II
