Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to the deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell.At the heart of Haeckel’s colossal legacy was the motivation not only to discover but also to explain. Antoine Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville (1680-1765) rimase così affascinato dalle conchiglie che fu l'autore di uno dei libri più autorevoli e spettacolari loro dedicati. La sua "La Conchyliologie ou Histoire Naturelle des Coquilles de Mer, d'Eau Douce, Terrestres et Fossiles", pubblicata a Parigi nel 1780 è una summa del sapere di allora nei campi complementari di minearologia e studio delle conchiglie ed ebbe un successo tale da rendere popolare e di moda lo studio della storia naturale. Botanico e artista, Dezallier raffigurò le conchiglie a grandezza naturale e le colorò a mano con uno stile rococò usando addirittura degli specchi per renderne i dettagli. L'dizione, completa di un frontespizio basato su un disegno originale del pittore di corte Francois Boucher (1703-1770) fu finanziata da numerosi appassionati e eruditi.
