Nell'agosto del 1947, insieme alla proclamazione dell'indipendenza dell'India, veniva sancita anche l'istituzione di due stati differenti, distinti su base religiosa: l'India e il musulmano Pakistan. La "Partition" generò un'imponente migrazione in una direzione e nell'altra: sikh e indù lasciarono le regioni attribuite al Pakistan e i musulmani emigrarono da quelle indiane. Fu un evento gigantesco e tragico che coinvolse 15 milioni di persone e generò massacri e violenze: si parla di due milioni di morti. E fu l'origine di una tensione fra i due stati che si trascina ancor oggi e che nel 1971 ha visto la sanguinosissima guerra da cui è nato il Bangladesh.
