"Ho scritto questo libro quarant'anni fa per richiamare l'attenzione sul fatto che le regole sul comportamento sessuale umano stabilite dalla Chiesa, e in particolar modo da papa Paolo VI nell'enciclica Humanae Vitae, sono in contraddizione con le funzioni "naturali" della sessualità. Nonostante tutte le obiezioni sollevate da me e da numerosi altri studiosi, i papi e i nunzi apostolici successivi a Paolo VI hanno insistito sulla loro "dottrina morale sul matrimonio proposta con costante fermezza dal magistero della Chiesa". Papa Benedetto XVI ha riassunto di recente la sua visione teologica della sessualità con queste parole: "l'evoluzione ha generato la sessualità al fine della riproduzione". Mi dispiace ribadire, ancora oggi, che queste affermazioni sono obiettivamente del tutto errate. E in più generano anche gravi conseguenze per chi attende e si augura un dialogo sempre più aperto tra scienza e fede. E altrettanto priva di senso è la pretesa che "qualsiasi atto matrimoniale deve rimanere aperto alla trasmissione della vita".
