Viruses and Human Disease
Ellen G. Strauss , James H. Strauss
editore: Academic Press Inc
pagine: 383
This is the first text to examine the connection between virology and human disease. It is also the first book to integrate basic virology with pathophysiological conditions. By contrast, most virology textbooks focus on the molecular biology involved without adequate reference to physiology. "Viruses and Human Disease" is four-color throughout and contains clearly labeled figures and tables. It provides a concise overview of animal viruses, emphasizing those causing diseases in humans. It integrates discussion of molecular biology, epidemiology, and the history of human viruses. It presents treatment of prions, gene therapy, and vaccine development. It is illustrated in color by an expert virologist. It includes world maps depicting the current distribution of existing and newly emerging viruses.

Nuclear Medicine Textbook
Methodology and Clinical Applications. 2 Volume-set

editore: Springer International Publishing AG
pagine: 1331
This textbook seeks to expand the old concept of Nuclear Medicine so as to adapt it to the new scenarios opened especially by the emergence of hybrid imaging, and more generally by the close interaction with other clinical specialties, and achieve the best possible benefits for patients. In fact, today the diagnostic applications of nuclear medicine cannot be considered as stand-alone procedures, separate from other modalities of diagnostic imaging. This is especially true for those radiologic imaging procedures that can be synergistically combined with nuclear medicine imaging, as is now routinely done with hybrid PET/CT and SPECT/CT (while the use of PET/MR is also growing). Thus, today's Nuclear Medicine specialists are expected to be specialists in multimodality imaging (in addition to expertise in therapy with radionuclides, which is crucial to the autonomy of the discipline). This requirement (which forms the basis of developing a new core curriculum for Nuclear Medicine specialists) forms the guiding concept throughout this new textbook, both in terms of its general structure and in each chapter, especially those devoted to the different clinical applications. Residents in Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging and Medical School students as well as School for Nuclear Medicine Technologists will find this textbook an invaluable tool.

The Roots of the Recovery Movement in Psychiatry
Lessons Learned
Jaak Rakfeldt
,
John S. Strauss
e altri
editore: Wiley-Blackwell (an imprint of John Wiley & Sons Ltd)
pagine: 294
As the global psychiatric community enters a new era of transformation, this book explores lessons learned from previous efforts with the goal of "getting it right" this time. In response to the common refrain that we know about and 'do' recovery already, the authors set the recovery movement within the conceptual framework of major thinkers and achievers in the history of psychiatry, such as Philippe Pinel, Dorothea Dix, Adolf Meyer, Harry Stack Sullivan, and Franco Basaglia. The book reaches beyond the usual boundaries of psychiatry to incorporate lessons from related fields, such as psychology, sociology, social welfare, philosophy, political economic theory, and civil rights. From Jane Addams and the Settlement House movement to Martin Luther King, Jr., and Gilles Deleuze, this book identifies the less well-known and less visible dimensions of the recovery concept and movement that underlie concrete clinical practice. In addition, the authors highlight the limitations of previous efforts to reform and transform mental health practice, such as the de-institutionalization movement begun in the 1950s, in the hope that the field will not have to repeat these same mistakes.
Their thoughtful analysis and valuable advice will benefit people in recovery, their loved ones, the practitioners who serve them, and society at large. Foreword by Fred Frese, Founder of the Community and State Hospital Section of the American Psychological Association and past president of the National Mental Health Consumers' Association

A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests
Administration, Norms, and Commentary

editore: Oxford University Press Inc
pagine: 1240
For the practicing neuropsychologist or researcher, keeping up with the sheer number of newly published or updated neuropsychological tests is a challenge, as is evaluating the utility and psychometric properties of each test in a clinical context. The goal of the thrid edition of A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests, a well-established neuropsychology reference text, is twofold. First, the Compendium is intended to serve as a guidebook that provides a comprehensive overview of the essential aspects of neuropsychological assessment practice. Second, it is intended as a sourcebook of critical reviews of major neuropsychological assessment tools for the use of practicing clinicians and researchers. Written in an easy-to-read reference format, and based on exhaustive reviews of research literature in neuropsychology, neurology, psychology and related disciplines, the book covers topics such as basic aspects of neuropsychological assessment as well as the theoretical background, norms and the utility, reliability and validity of neuropsychological tests. For this thrid edition, all chapters have been extensively revised and updated.
The text has been considerably expanded to provide a practical overview of the state of the field. Two new chapters have been added: "Psychometrics in neuropsychological assessment" and "Norms in neuropsychological assessment". The first two chapters present basic psychometric concepts and principles. Chapters three and four consider practical aspects of the history-taking interview and the assessment process itself. Chapter five provides guidelines on report writing. Chapters six through sixteen consist of detailed, critical reviews of specific neuropsychological tests, and address the topics of intelligence, achievement, executive function, attention, memory, language, visual perception, somatosensory and olfactory function, mood/personality and response bias. A unique feature is the inclusion of tables that summarise salient features of tests wihtin each domain so that readers can easily compare measures. Additional tables within each test review present important features of each test, highlight aspects of each normative database, and provide an overview of psychometric properties.
Of interest to neuropsychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists and educational and clinical psychologists working with adults as well as with paediatric populations, this volume will aid practitioners in selecting appropriate testing measures for their patients, and will provide them with the knowledge needed to arrive at empirically supported interpretations of test results.

editore: Academic Press Inc
pagine: 394
Structured to be a companion to the recently published "Handbook of Transfusion Medicine", the "Handbook of Pediatric Transfusion Medicine" is dedicated to pediatric hematology-oncology and transfusion medicine, a field which remains ambiguous and which has generated few comprehensive texts. This book stands alone as one of the few texts that addresses transfusion issues specific to pediatric medicine. Written in an eminently readable style, this authoritative handbook is a requirement for any pediatric physician or caregiver. It features topics such as: neonatal and fetal immune response and in utero development issues; blood compatability and pre-transfusion testing issues specific to pediatric and neonatal transfusion; and therapeutic apheresis including red blood cell exchange and prophylactic chronic erythrocytapheresis for sickle cell patients. It also includes a section that concentrates on the consent, quality and legal issues of blood transfusion and donation.
