Squamous Cell Cancer of the Neck

Robert Hermans

editore: Cambridge University Press

pagine: 164

Imaging studies provide crucial information on disease extent in head and neck malignancies. A thorough knowledge of the loco-regional anatomy of this complex area and a proper understanding of the natural disease spread pattern are prerequisites in the interpretation of these imaging studies. Tumor extent influences tumor staging, predicts outcome and influences treatment choices. Knowledge of the different treatment options and expected post-therapeutic tissue changes are also critical in order to use imaging adequately in the surveillance of these patients. After an introductory chapter on epidemiology and clinical signs, this book reviews the pertinent imaging findings for each of the major anatomical subsites. Emphasis is on CT and MRI, but PET and ultrasound are also discussed where appropriate. Reviews on modern surgical and radiotherapeutic techniques are included, helping the reader to understand post-treatment tissue changes and how to differentiate these from tumor recurrence or treatment complications.

Imaging of the Larynx

Robert Hermans

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 203

Notwithstanding the important role of direct clinical and endoscopic examination in modern management of pathological conditions of the larynx, radiological study the and, more specifically, cross-sectional imaging by CT and MRI make definite diagnostic contributions by virtue of their potential to display superbly the deeper extent of laryngeal lesions. Indeed, remarkable progress has been achieved during recent years in CT and MRI techniques as applied to the neck region. This book sets out to provide a sorely needed update of our knowledge of the diagnostic potential of these cross-sectional methods and constitutes a very welcome addition to our series "Medical Radiology", which aims to cover all important clinical imaging fields of modern diagnostic radiology. It will be of great interest to general and head and neck radiologists as well as to ENT surgeons and radiotherapists. Professor R. Hermans and the other distinguished contributors to this work are internationally renowned experts in the field and they have accumulated vast experi- ence and a wealth of radio-pathological knowledge of the larynx over the years. I would like to congratulate them most sincerely for this outstanding volume, its comprehensive contents and its superb illustrations. I hope that this book will meet with the same great success as previously published volumes in the series. I would appreciate any constructive criticism that might be offered.

Head and Neck Cancer Imaging

A. L. Baert, Robert Hermans

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 382

This book provides a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art imaging in head and neck cancer. Precise determination of tumor extent is of the utmost importance in these neoplasms, as it has important consequences for staging of disease, prediction of outcome and choice of treatment. Only the radiologist can fully appreciate submucosal, perineural, and perivascular tumor spread, and detect metastatic disease at an early stage. Imaging is also of considerable benefit for patient surveillance after treatment. All imaging modalities currently used in the management of head and neck neoplasms are considered in depth, and in addition newer techniques such as PET-CT and diffusion-weighted MRI are discussed. This book will help the reader to recommend, execute and report head and neck imaging studies at a high level of sophistication and thereby to become a respected member of the team managing head and neck cancer.
